What power supply is needed for a gaming PC

Of course, a power supply is not the brightest component of a computer. But he is such a gray cardinal, on which the normal operation of the computer depends. Therefore, choosing a good power supply is perhaps even more important than choosing a video card. So, how to choose a power supply for a gaming PC and not lose. Let’s get it right.

Power supply selection
The very first quality factor of any PSU is its power, or the number of watts. If you take a power supply that will produce less watts than the system will need, then at a certain load the PC will turn off. On the other hand, than installing an overly powerful PSU would also be a waste of time. And how to be here?

When you start building your new gaming PC, you need to evaluate how much power the components will consume. But there is one small point to consider. Namely, you should not buy a power supply end-to-end in terms of power. It is better to buy with some margin of 15-20 percent. Such prudence will be an excellent tool for the subsequent upgrade of the system or overclocking.

If you do not want to manually read the system consumption, then you can use special calculators, which are very numerous on the network. So, for example, the eXtreme Power Supply program is very functional. In it, you can configure your future PC and see how much power will be needed for its normal operation. You can also set acceleration parameters so that the program adjusts the energy consumption of the system.

In addition to calculating the energy consumption, the calculator also calculates the power of the uninterruptible power supply and the required power of the power supply. It is clear that the calculation of the calculator is purely theoretical, so you most likely will not be able to find the power supply with the estimated power. In this case, look for the nearest PSU at face value (up).

When it comes to overclocking, very serious requirements are placed on the power supply. Here, in comparison with a conventional PC, problems can arise not only with low power, but also with low efficiency of the cooling system. Yes, do not forget about overheating of the power supply. Remember that when overheating, not only the power of the PSU drops, but also the electronic components wear out much faster.

Power Supply Efficiency and 80 Plus System
Note that electronics works with absolute power very rarely in the real world. In most cases, we squeeze from our machines no more than 80 Plus percent of the power.

During operation, the PSU will never be able to give 100% percent of its power. What can I do, because you can’t argue against physics. In general, a good PSU can give out about 80% of the declared capacity. The remaining power is lost due to imperfections in the electronic components and heat losses.

Therefore, we need to talk about rated power. Remember that the rated power is the power that is written on the PSU nameplate. Therefore, if you buy a 400 W PSU, then in maximum load mode it will consume about 445 W of energy (provided that it has an efficiency of 90%). So, if you care about the amount of payment for electricity, you need to either look for a unit with greater efficiency, or buy a unit with less power, which is enough for you. Note that the PSU efficiency is a non-linear indicator. Depending on the load and voltage in the outlet, it can vary.

Another important point is the effective cooling system of the unit. After all, the more the details of the unit are heated, the more its efficiency will fall. So, for a gaming PC, water cooling is a good idea. In extreme cases – a large low-speed fan.

Note that PSUs are easily distinguished by their effectiveness. Today you can find models that boast 80 Plus Gold. This means that the unit not only has high efficiency, but also has a “green” characteristic. Our advice – in a powerful gaming PC, only such a PSU.
