How to calibrate a monitor

How to calibrate a monitor
Many people look at computer monitors all day. And if you read these lines, most likely you are also looking at the monitor screen. But how many people spend time calibrating the color of the monitor? Correct calibration ensures that your colors and black levels are correct and that your monitor provides the best picture for editing and viewing images and videos. In addition, your eyes will be much easier!

Nevertheless, it is not necessary to contact specialists with a request to correctly adjust the color rendition of your monitor. But this is an extra cost in time and money. But, a quick calibration of the monitor can be done at home. So, on your own, you can significantly improve the picture quality of the monitor, without which all the advantages of new-fangled technologies like HDR and UHD remain useless.

In our material, we will tell you how to calibrate the monitor with your own hands and without the help of special devices. So let’s get started!

Before starting the calibration process, you need to do a few things. These steps are not absolutely necessary, but they certainly will not be superfluous in the way of achieving the best results.

Turn on the monitor at least half an hour before calibration so that it can warm up to its normal operating temperature.
Set the monitor resolution to your own default screen resolution.
Make sure you calibrate in a room with moderate lighting. The room does not have to be completely dark, but you definitely do not need glare and color shades as a result of direct light.
Check out the controls on your monitor. They can be located on the monitor itself, on the keyboard or on the control panel in the operating system.

How to calibrate a Windows 10 monitor

The easiest way to calibrate monitor color reproduction is to use the built-in tools of the operating system. For example, in Windows 10, a calibration tool can be found by opening the Settings application.

Monitor calibration for windows 10 includes the following steps:
In the “Settings” menu, select “System” in the main menu, then select “Screen”.
After opening the panel, scroll down and click “Advanced Display Settings”.
Scroll down. In the heading “Color Settings” you will find the link “Color Calibration”. Click on it. You can also open the tool by typing “calibration” in the Cortana search box and selecting “Calibrate Display Color” from the results.
In older versions of Windows, you can find the Color Calibration utility in the Display section of the control panel, which is listed in the “Appearance and Personalization” section. You can also open this utility using Windows Search. Just enter “color calibration” in the search bar
Now that you are in the calibration tool, follow the on-screen instructions to select the gamma, brightness, contrast, and color balance settings for your display.
As soon as the calibration wizard finishes its work, make sure that you select “current calibration” or return to the previous calibration if you are not satisfied with the results.
The new calibration will be saved as an .ics file or a color calibration file and will be displayed as a new International Color Consortium (ICC) profile in the Color Management Settings application. The easiest way to open this application is to enter “color management” in the search field and select the first result. After opening it, you can select your monitor from the list of devices and see which ICC profiles are available.

Modern laptop displays are far from the early archaic green and black monochrome displays of the 1980s. Today, displays have the ability to display rich color and smooth, seamless motion. However, with their default settings, most of the image and color settings for the laptop are not optimal: either the color, brightness and contrast settings, or those with brightness and contrast that are too high for display, are sinning. You can fix it with simple calibration steps. At the same time, calibration of the laptop monitor can be done in exactly the same way as described in the previous paragraph.

If for most users manual color adjustment of the monitor is designed to relieve the eye more, then for professional photographers the correct color display is real bread. We mean that when working with photos it is very important that the photos on the screen and after printing have the same colors and color reproduction. Therefore, color adjustment for photography is so important. And here are our tips on how to do this on your own.
